Thunder Soccer continued their regular season this past weekend, travelling to Portage to face the Voyageurs on Saturday and coming back home to play the NAIT Ooks on Sunday.
The women’s team continued their winning streak, defeating the Voyageurs 6-0 on Saturday and the Ooks 1-0 on Sunday. Similar to their previous weekend, their seven goals over the entire weekend were scored by seven different goal scorers. Amy Fayant had an incredible game against Portage, netting a goal and two assists, while Vanessa Gomez had the game winning goal against NAIT the next day. The goaltending was also impressive, as Madison Kempster accumulated two clean sheets, stopping one shot on Saturday and eight shots on Sunday. After this weekend, CUE women’s soccer has now won five games. Many players are pushing their way into the ACAC stat leaders for the season including Kempster, who is first in the ACAC in wins and second in shoutouts, while Vanessa Pietramala is top five in assists, and Abby Burton is sixth in the league in goals.
For the men it was a weekend of draws, as Saturday's game against the Voyageurs ended 2-2, and Sunday’s game versus NAIT also ended at 2-2. Against the Voyageurs, Carlos Echeverria got both goals for the Thunder off penalty kicks. He continued his goal scoring on Sunday, potting another goal off a penalty kick and chipping in with an assist on the first Thunder goal of the game by Sam Vieira. Echeverria is now top ten in the ACAC in goals with 6.
Thunder Soccer looks to build on the past weekend as they go up against The King’s University Eagles at home on Saturday October 11th, the only game for each team over the Thanksgiving weekend. With three weeks of the ACAC regular season remaining, women’s soccer holds first place in the North Division at 8-1-1 and men’s soccer sits in fourth with a record of 3-4-3.
