Thunder Split Weekend with GPRC Following Matinee Loss

Thunder Split Weekend with GPRC Following Matinee Loss

EDMONTON, AB (November 20, 2021) – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder welcomed the Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) Wolves in a Saturday matinee as the two teams wrapped up their weekend series. Both teams came out hungry, but the Wolves were able to avenge their Friday night loss with a 3-1 win to split the weekend series.

The first set was action filled, with both teams clawing for every point. Both the Thunder and Wolves exchanged leads and kept things close throughout the set. However, it was GPRC that took a late lead and managed to hang on as they took the first set 25-19. The tight play continued into the second set, as neither team was ever too far ahead or behind on the other. This time it was the Thunder that were able to grab the lead late and hang on as they took the second set 25-21 to even the match up. The third set was much the same as the other two sets, with neither CUE or GPRC able to control too much of the matchup. Perhaps the tightest set of the match, things were interested right until the end where the Wolves escaped with a 25-23 set win. GPRC was able to carry that momentum into the fourth set and open things up a little more. Grabbing an early lead, the Wolves carried the lead right through the set and withstood the comeback attempts from the Thunder to take the fourth set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

After the game, Thunder head coach Ken McLaughlin commented: "a skill in and of itself is learning to bring it in back-to-back matches. We started flat and didn't get close to playing at the level that was needed to contend with GPRC after a big win last night."

The One Team Sports Players of the Game were #17 Chad Morrison for GPRC and #13 James Bryce for CUE.

The Thunder return to action next Friday when they welcome the NAIT Ooks to Concordia, with the men's game starting at 6 pm.
