Thunder Drop Regular Season Opener to Lakeland

EDMONTON, AB (November 12, 2021) – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder welcomed the Lakeland College Rustlers on Friday night to open their regular season. The Thunder had no answer for the Rustlers as Lakeland was able to take this one in straight sets, 3-0.

The Rustlers came out hot to start the game as they took control of the first set early. After jumping to a quick lead, Lakeland never looked back as they took the first set 25-13. The second set began with back and forth action as the Thunder looked to find a spark and keep up with Lakeland. Ultimately, the Rustlers proved to be too much as they took the second set 25-14. The third set was much of the same, as Lakeland jumped to an early lead and the Thunder could never seem to get their game going to chip away at the lead. The Rustlers took the third set 25-10 to close the game out in three straight sets. The One Team Sports Players of the Game are #5 Jana Laing for the Lakeland Rustlers and #6 Avery Plandowski for the Thunder.

After the game, Thunder interim head coach Karly Edgar commented on the game: "we had a lot of built-up anticipation for our first league game in 18 months, but we were never able to find our flow. We know we're better than that and we know what we need to fix for tomorrow."

The Thunder continue their season as they travel the Lakeland Rustlers tomorrow night to finish their weekend set. CUE returns home next weekend as they host the GPRC Wolves in a double header Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
