Thunder Drop Close One Against Edmonton Rival MacEwan Griffins

Thunder Drop Close One Against Edmonton Rival MacEwan Griffins

EDMONTON, AB – Coming off of a hot start to the ACAC season last week, the Thunder (2-1-0) played host to the defending ACAC Champion MacEwan University Griffins (2-1-0) at the Clareview Arena on Friday night.

The opening period was fast paced with both teams getting their chances. The Thunder appeared to take an early lead before having a goal waived off due to the net coming off the posts. Nothing was solved in the opening stanza, with the Thunder outshooting the Griffins 10 – 6.

The 2nd period started where the first one left off and the Griffins kept early pressure on the Thunder, adding more physicality to the game. The teams continued the scoreless play, while MacEwan evened up the shots at 10 apiece.

The 3rd period came fast with the Thunder finally breaking the scoreless draw to take a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by team captain #7 Adam Moghrabi (assists from Matt Benko and Ian Mclellan). Not even a minute later the Griffins would even the score up with a goal of their own by Cam Gotaas (assisted by Nicolas Correale and Bryan Arneson). Gotaas would get his second goal of the game a few minutes later to seal the victory for the Griffins as they defeat the Thunder 2-1. The Thunder outshot the Griffins 30-24 on the night.

The Kahunaverse Sport Group Player of the Game for the visiting MacEwan Griffins was #27 Bryan Arneson and for the Thunder #7 Adam Moghrabi.

The Griffins will host the Thunder tomorrow night at the Downtown Community Arena at 6:00 PM.
