Griffins defeat Thunder 5-2

Griffins defeat Thunder 5-2

EDMONTON AB – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder played host to the visiting MacEwan Griffins in the second game of their back-to-back series. The Griffins got the better of the Thunder with a final score of 5-2.

The Griffins opened up the scoring in the first 5 minutes of play, and extended that lead by 2, 20 seconds later. The Thunder were able to hold off the Griffins for the remainder of the first. The Thunder came out strong in the second, cutting the lead halfway through the second, but the Griffins answered back with a quick goal. MacEwan and the Thunder had a tough time staying out of the box, as both teams had 5 on 3 opportunities, but failed to capitalize. The 3rd period had the most scoring action, the Thunder was given some hope, but the Griffins potted their 5th in the dying minutes of play to put a dagger in the Thunder, and ended their comeback opportunity.

The Thunder are currently in a playoff spot and need some wins in their last few games to solidify their spot in the standings. Next weekend the Thunder will be facing off against Briercrest and the Griffins will be facing off against Augustana. The Big Kahuna Player of the game for the Visiting Griffins was #21 Brett Njaa and for the Thunder was #3 David Randall
