Thunder Continue to Roll at ACAC Badminton Tournament #2

EDMONTON, AB - This past weekend the Thunder badminton team was back in action as The Kings University hosted ACAC Badminton Tournament #2. Overall the Thunder had a great performance that saw finals appearances in 4 of the 5 categories leaving them in 1st place with 166 points.

In the men’s singles division, it was Nicolas Pittman who cruised his way to the finals defeating opponents Alex Stewart of Kings (21-6, 21-6) and Smit Patel of NAIT (21-19, 21-16). Pittman would fall short in the final match against Roymond Kim of NAIT (21-19, 21-10) and would settle for the 2nd place finish.

In the women’s singles event it was an all Thunder showdown in the finals featuring two time CCAA gold medalist Takeisha Wang and rookie teammate Johnna Rymes. Johnna won her semi-final match with ease as she defeated Priyanna Ramdhani of Olds College (21-9, 21-4). In the other semi-final match it was Teakeisha Wang defeating Cecilia Wolski of Kings (21-8, 21-7) to advance to the finals. The first set of the final match was very exciting as Rymes was testing the former CCAA champion however Takeisha would take the set 21-19. Takeisha was able run away with the 2nd set 21-10 to take the tournament victory.

The women’s doubles competition saw the duo of Jasleen Kaur and Takeisha Wang pair up for the first time this season and it was a success. After defeating the NAIT pairing of Kaitlyn Gee and Connie Juang (21-9, 21-5) in the semi-finals they would advance to the finals to take on another NAIT pairing of Samantha Hsu and Eyota Kwan where they would claim the tournament victory 21-13, 21-15.

Concordia’s pairing of Nicolas Pittman and Johnna Rymes was proven to be a success as they battled their way into the finals by defeating Tyler Walsh & Samantha Hsu of NAIT in a hard fought semi-final winning the match (21-17, 20-22, 21-12). Pittman and Rymes fell short in the finals as the Ooks duo of Alex Fung and Eyota Kwan won the match (21-10, 21-17) for the tournament victory.

After two tournaments this season the Concordia sits 1st overall in the standing with 340 points. The Thunder badminton team will be back on the courts February 2nd, 2020 as ACAC Badminton Tournament #3 will be hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton.
