EDMONTON, AB – On Friday night the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference(ACAC) was please to announce that Matt Benko of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder was named to the ACAC Men's Hockey Second All-Conference Team.
Matt was outstanding for the Thunder this season, the third year defenseman was a major contributor to the Thunder offense having tallied 7 goals and 18 assist for a career high 25 points in 27 games. Only his brother Tyler was ahead of him in team scoring with 29 points.
Thunder head coach Joey Bouchard admires the hard work ethic that Matt brings to the table and is proud of the veteran defenseman stating, "Matt is very deserving of this recognition. He is an elite defenseman in the league and reached his personal best in many statistical categories this season. Furthermore, Matt is a tremendous leader who sets a great example and has earned the respect of his peers through his work ethic and his ability to play a solid two-way game. We are very proud of Matt's accomplishments this year."
Concordia took a major leap this season and competed with some of the best teams in the conference finishing the regular season with a record of 11-14-1-2 for 6th place. The Thunder fought hard in the first round of the ACAC playoffs taking the MacEwan Griffins to a deciding game #3 where they would fall short 4-2 in a very close battle.
