PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB – The Thunder Men's and Women's curling teams were all smiles on Saturday as they concluded round robin play on Day 4 at the 2020 CCAA Curling Canada National Championships as both teams advanced to the semi-finals.
The Thunder women's team (4-3) did enough in the early days of the championships to secure their berth in the semi-finals despite dropping two close games on Saturday. The team opened up Draw #12 with a 10-5 loss to the Humber Hawks (4-3; OCAA). In Draw #14, the Thunder played the defending national champions, Douglas College Royals (6-1; PACWEST), and gave a spirited effort, but ultimately coming up short in a 7-5 decision.
The women's team will get a rematch vs the #2 seeded Humber Hawks on Sunday morning in the championship semi-final at 8:30 AM MST.
The men's team would fare better on Day 4 of the championships with two exciting matches. In Draw #11, the Thunder would match up against ACAC champions SAIT Trojans (3-4). In a wild back and forth affair, the Thunder would ultimately come out on top with a 13-9 victory that saw them score 4 in the 9th end, forcing SAIT to throw in the towel. In Draw #13, the Thunder wrapped up round robin play against the feisty Lakeland Rustlers (3-4; ACAC) in the featured game that was live streamed online on CBC. Despite being in control for most of the match, the Rustlers refused to bend the knee to the defending national champions, before the Thunder could pull away with an 8-6 win.
The men's team will match up against the #2 seeded NAIT Ooks on Sunday morning in the championship semi-final at 8:30 AM MST.
