Thunder Find the Podium in Final Tune-Up Before Championships

EDMONTON, AB – FEBRUARY 2, 2020

Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) hosted the ACAC Badminton Tournament #3 on Sunday, February 2. The NAIT Ooks put on a strong showing finishing first and second in Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles, as well as second in Women’s Singles, Women’s Double and Mixed Doubles to finish in first place in tournament team points.

In the men’s singles bracket, NAIT had an extremely strong showing as they won three out of four quarter-finals. The first semi-final saw two NAIT athletes go head to head; as Roymond Kim defeated Alex Fung (21-14, 21-6) to advance to the final. In the other semi-final, NAIT’s Smit Patel beat CUE’s Nicolas Pittman in a tight contest (21-15, 21-19) to set up an all the NAIT final. In the finals, Roymond Kim took first place over Smit Patel (21-12, 21-14). The third place match saw CUE’s Nicolas Pittman defeat NAIT’s Alex Fung (21-18, 21-7).

The women’s single bracket saw a much more balanced field as each participating school had an athlete win a quarter-final match. In the Semi-Finals, Johnna Rymes from CUE defeated Cecilia Wolski of King’s (21-5, 21-8) and NAIT’s Eyota Kwan defeated Priyanna Ramdhani of Olds College (21-14, 21-7). In the finals, CUE’s Johnna Rymes defeated NAIT’s Eyota Kwan in a hard fought match (15-21, 21-14, 21-14). The third place match saw Priyanna Ramdhani of Olds College beat Cecilia Wolski of King’s (21-17, 21-9).

The men’s double bracket, NAIT once again had a strong showing winning two of the four quarter-finals, with a team from Olds and a team from King’s taking the other two. The first semi-final saw NAIT’s Alex Fung and Tyler Walsh defeat Noah Jeffrey and Troy Morgan from Olds (21-9, 21-14) to advance to the final. The second semi-final saw NAIT’s John Li and Smit Patel knock off Alex Stewart and Narayan Ramdhani from King’s (21-14, 21-12) to set up another all NAIT final. In the final, John Li and Smit Patel defeated Alex Fung and Tyler Walsh in a tight contest (21-19, 22-20). The third place match saw Alex Stewart and Narayan Ramdhani from King’s knock off Noah Jeffrey and Troy Morgan from Olds (21-18, 21-17).

In the women’s doubles bracket, NAIT took two of the quarter-finals setting up an all-NAIT semi-final, while a team from Olds College and a team from CUE also advanced to meet in the semi-finals. In the first semi-final, NAIT’s Connie Juang and Eyota Kwan knocked off NAIT’s Samantha Hsu and Ivy Ung in a hard fought back and forth match (20-22, 21-10, 21-13). The other semi-final saw CUE’s Johnna Rymes and Takeisha Wang defeat Layce Donaldson and Priyanna Ramdhani of Olds College (21-7, 21-10). In the final, CUE’s Johnna Rymes and Takeisha Wang defeated NAIT’s Connie Juang and Eyota Kwan (21-14, 21-18). The third place match saw Olds College’s Layce Donaldson and Priyanna Ramdhani defeat Samantha Hsu and Ivy Ung from NAIT in a hard fought back and forth match (21-17, 21-18).

The mixed doubles bracket also saw a good showing from NAIT as they won three of the four quarterfinals, with a team from Concordia taking the fourth. In the first semi-final, Concordia’s Nicolas Pittman and Takeisha Wang defeated NAIT’s Roymond Kim and Kaitlyn Gee in a very close battle (21-18, 22-20) to advance to the final. The other semi-final was an all-NAIT affair as Tyler Walsh and Samantha Hsu defeated John Li and Connie Juang (21-12, 21-18). In the final, Concordia’s Nicolas Pittman and Takeisha Wang defeated NAIT’s Tyler Walsh and Samantha Hsu (21-8, 21-14). The third place match as another all-NAIT match, with John Li and Connie Juang defeating Roymond Kim and Kaitlyn Gee (21-16, 21-16).

With all the results calculated, the final team standings saw NAIT finish first with 183 points, Concordia in second with 157 points, King’s in third with 117 points, and Olds College in fourth with 98 points.

These results set up the 2020 ACAC Badminton Championships to be held at NAIT from February 22-23.
