2019-20 Thunder Athletics Blue & Gold Awards Night Recap

EDMONTON, AB – On Friday May 29th, 2020 the Concordia Thunder Athletics program celebrated the achievements and successes from the 2019-20 season at the Blue & Gold Athletics Awards Banquet. Since we were unable to celebrate this annual event in person it was streamed live on ACAC TV for the first time in Thunder Athletics history.

In addition to some honorable greetings from Dr. Tim Loreman (President and Vice Chancellor of CUE), Dr. Barb Van Ingen (VP of Student Life & Learning) and Joel Mrak (Director of Athletics & Recreation), each team is recognized for their athletic achievements in following following awards:

Thunder Leadership Award

Recognizes a student-athlete on each respective team that demonstrates a commitment to the team and its players at all times. They are considered excellent leaders both on and off the field of play and in the classroom. They demonstrate strong ethics, sportsmanship, and work hard to make themselves better, as well as those around them.

The Thunder Athletics All Heart Award

Recognizes a student-athlete on each respective team that has earned the admiration of their teammates through unselfish loyalty to their athletics team/program, promotes team unity, and serves as a positive role model on campus and in the community. They exemplify a strong work ethic, they never complain, and they put the success of the team ahead of their own personal successes and achievements. They are full of team/school spirit and are considered the heart and soul of their team.

Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete

Recognizes the student athlete(s) for achieving the highest academic GPA on their respective team.

Most Valuable Player:

The student athlete that achieved an extraordinary amount of success throughout the season in their respective sport.

Men’s Soccer

Up first, the men’s soccer team led by head coach Hussein Shabdi who in his rookie season led the Thunder to a an impressive 8-3-1 record (2nd in ACAC North). Erik Archimowitz was presented with the Leadership Award while Ahmed Abubaker was honored with the All Heart Award. Armaan Bhinder was recognized with the Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete award and 4th year defender Kenny Johnson was named the team Most Valuable Player(MVP).

Women’s Soccer

On the women’s side, it was head coach Franco Imbrogno and the Thunder Women’s Soccer team up next to be recognized for their success. To start things off, 5th year midfielder, Gabby Bayne, was recognized for the team Leadership Award. 3rd year striker, Rebecca Leavell, was named with the team All Heart Award and 4th year defender Paige Martin was named as the Most Valuable Player. Sarah McLelland was honoured with the Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete Award.

Men’s Volleyball

Next up, it was head coach Lucas Jacobson and the Thunder Men’s volleyball team.  5th year setter, Marc Langevin, was acknowledged with the Team Leadership Award while 5th year libero, Cole Davis, was named with the team All Heart Award. It was a split for this years Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete award as Chad Sieben and Ethan Murray shared the honours. 2nd year outside hitter Wyatt Turnbull was named team MVP.

Women’s Volleyball

First year coach Erinn Jacula and the Thunder Women’s volleyball team were up next to take the spotlight, recognized first was 2nd year outside Tia Schram for the team Leadership Award. 4th year libero, Shae McDonald, was named both team All Heart and Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete. The Most Valuable Player for the Thunder was 5th year middle, Tianna Smith.

Golf

In his first season taking over the golf program, it was time for Larry Petryk and the Thunder golf team to be recognized. 2nd year golfer Kennedy Turcotte earned the team Leadership Award. In his second year, Riley Higdon was presented with both the All Heart Award and the Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete Award. 5th year ACAC gold medalist, Kassidy Turcotte, was named the team Most Valuable Player.

Hockey

The Thunder men’s hockey team coached by Joey Bouchard in his first season with Concordia took to the screen to acknowledge the team successes. The Thunder captain, 5th year forward Adam Moghrabi, was presented with the team Leadership Award while fellow winger and assistant captain, Ian McLellan, was named with the Team all Heart award. 1st year forward Peter Tomaras took the honours as Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete and 3rd year defencemen, Matt Benko, was the team MVP.

Men’s Basketball

Reagan Wood and the men’s basketball team took to the big screen for their awards presentation. 2nd year point guard, Luka Korsec, was recognized with the team Leadership Award. 2nd year small forward, Carsten Ritter earned the team All Heart Award and the Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete Award. 5th year centre Ronald Bacon Jr.  was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Women’s Basketball

Robbie Valpreda and the Thunder women’s basketball team began their awards program by honouring 2nd year forward Amy Van Brabant with the team Leadership award and 2nd year guard, Madison Murdoch, took home the All Heart Award. 2nd year forward Naomi Casteleijn was honoured with the Outstanding Scholastic Student Athlete Award. 2nd year forward Ann Ulmer was recognized as the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Curling

Taina Smiley and the Thunder Curling team was up next to celebrate their successful season. 4th year third, Madysan Theroux was presented with the team Leadership Award and 2nd year curler Kennedy Turcotte was named team All Heart. Gina Friedrich was the Outstanding Scholastic Athlete while 4th year lead for the men’s team, Evan Van Amsterdam, was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Cross Country and Indoor Track

Next up on the podium was Cross Country and Indoor Track head coach Matthew Norminton. 5th year runner Bailey Troccoli-Hughes was presented with the team Leadership Award and fellow teammate 5th year Madison Masterson was recognized with the All Heart Award. Mienna Starolsielski was the team’s Outstanding Scholastic Athlete while 5th year runner Anna Zulic was the team’s Most Valuable Female Athlete.

On the men’s side, 5th year runner Brad Agnew was presented with the team Leadership Award. 2nd year runner Brandon Morris received the team All Heart award while 1st year runner Aaron Bender was recognized as the Outstanding Scholastic Athlete. Leonard Chesoo in his 2nd year running with the Thunder was named the team’s Most Valuable Male Athlete.

Badminton

In his final year as the Thunder head coach, Kevin MacAlpine, and the badminton team had many successes to share tonight. Kassidy Turcotte who is in her 5th year with the Thunder, was presented with the Team Leadership award. 3rd year CCAA silver medalist, Nicolas Pittman, was named All Heart while 5th year phenome, Takeisha Wang, took the honours of Outstanding Scholastic Athlete and Most Valuable Athlete.

Minor Official of the Year

In his third year as a Thunder Athletics Minor Official, Evan George was presented as this season’s ACAC Minor Official of the Year. Evan has a been a great mentor for new hires joining the team, he can work at any position as needed, and will always go the extra mile to ensure a game day runs successfully. Congratulations Evan!

Tom Austin Sportsmanship Award

The goal of the $1000 Tom Austin Athletic Sportsmanship Award is to recognize and celebrate sportsmanship in the Concordia Thunder Athletics program and to honour the memory of Tom Austin.  To achieve this goal, this is awarded annually to one athlete from a Concordia Thunder Athletic team who demonstrates sportsmanship through his/her actions. The recipient must demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship and commitment to the team through virtues such as fairness, civility, integrity, courage and persistence. This year’s Tom Austin Sportsmanship Award was awarded to Kyra Robinson of the Women’s Soccer Team!
